The landscape is ever-changing, and sometimes it changes so dramatically that you might think you have gone to a different country. On this highland adventure tour, you get to see the best of the south in just 4 days at a comfortable pace in a modified 4x4 vehicle. A visit to Gullfoss and Geysir, along with thrilling rides into the valleys of Landmannalaugar and Þórsmörk, are just some of the highlights of this tour. Add in a Glacier Walk on Sólheimajökull glacier, exploration of the historic valley of Þjórsárdalur and a visit to the world famous Blue Lagoon, and you have the ultimate south coast adventure. Day 1: Reykjavik - Þingvellir - Gullfoss - Geysir - Þjórsárdalur

Your knowledgeable and friendly driver guide will pick you up from your accommodations in Reykjavík at 08.30 am.  Your first stop is at Þingvellir National Park, site of the ancient Viking Parliament and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Here, we get a good view of the Mid-Atlantic ridge, an area where the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates are slowly drifting apart. Next up, you go on a short drive to the Geysir geothermal area, home to countless hot springs. Here, you will see the mighty Strókkur geyser spew boiling hot water up to 20 meters in the air every 5-10 minutes. After another short ride, you arrive at the famous Gullfoss waterfall, one of Iceland's most beautiful waterfalls. The thunderous gush of water cascades down about 32 meters, in two giant steps, into a deep gorge.  Afterwards, you are driven through the farmlands of the south to a country hotel that sits in the rural Fljótshlíð, which is away from any light source – a perfect spot for viewing the Northern Lights, if the conditions are right. You spend the evening at a cozy country hotel.

Driving: 4-5 hours

Day 2: Hekla - Landmannalaugar

Some of the most beautiful scenery of Iceland is found in the Torfajökull Massif in the South Icelandic Highlands. Here, you will find a famous bathing hot spring that is revered for the surreal and beautiful landscape surrounding it. You will go through Þjórsárdalur historical valley, passing Stöng, an archaeological site with a farm that was covered in volcanic ashes from the Hekla volcano in 1104. You will stop at the Ljótipollur Lake or “Ugly Pond”, an eruptive fissure that was created during an enormous eruption in 1470. Despite its name, the crater is uniquely impressive. Passing by the Hekla volcano, you reach Landmannalaugar – the third largest geothermal area in the world. Once in Landmannalaugar, you will have the opportunity to soak in the hot river to relax before driving back through the southern farmlands to our accommodations for the night. Don’t forget to keep a look out for the Northern Lights. You will spend the evening at a cozy country hotel.

Driving: 3- 8 hours (average,depending on conditions)

Day 3: Seljalandsfoss – Þórsmörk

Þórsmörk valley is a natural paradise named after the Norse God Thor. To access this area, your driver guide will utilize the special capbabilities of their 4x4 modified vehicle to drive over approximately 25 un-bridged glacial rivers.  This adventurous ride takes you inland behind the glaciers to this wonderful valley, full of geological wonders and unique vistas. Here, you will have various options for easy hiking and exploring of the area.  Among other places, you will visit the canyons of Merkurker and Stakkholtsgjá, as well as hike to the small mountain of Valahnúkur. Thórsmörk is a nature reserve of unmatched natural beauty. On the way out of Thorsmork, you will have a short stop by Seljalandsfoss, a 60 meter high waterfall that is lit up at night and you can walk behind it. You will spend the evening at a cozy country hotel.

Driving: 3-4 hours

Day 4: South coast – Ice walk on Sólheimajokull glacier - Krísuvík – Blue Lagoon – Reykjavík

In the morning, you will head east to Solheimajokull glacier, a glacier tongue extending from Myrdalsjökull glacier, the fourth largest in Iceland. There, a glacier guide will equip you with crampons, a harness and an ice axe for your walk on the glacier. This is a safe and easy glacier walk on crampons up on to the ice field where you will discover a wonderland of ice sculptures, ridges and deep crevasses.  After a thrilling adventure on the ice, your driver guide will take you on a joyride along a black sand beach. There, you can admire the beauty and power of the North Atlantic Ocean. When back on the main road, you will head west and pass through the small villages of Hvolsvollur, Hella and Selfoss. You will then turn off the main road and head to Reykjanes Peninsula -  the south-westernmost tip of Iceland. This volcanically active area is full of barren lava fields and old shield volcanoes. There is so much geothermal activity in this area that the high temperatures of the hot springs are being harnessed to supply energy to Iceland. The Reykjanes Peninsula is also home to the famous Blue Lagoon. There, you can enjoy bathing and relaxing in the warm and mineral rich water, known for its positive effects on the skin. After a lovely bath in the Blue Lagoon, you are driven back to Reykjavik and will be dropped off at your accommodations.
