Itinerary

Day 1: Reykjavík - Veiðivötn – Jökulheimar

We start our highland adventure by driving from Reykjavík to Veiðivötn. As we head south, we will pass through charming villages until we turn inland away from the greeneries of the farmlands and into some of the blackest deserts in the world. After a drive in the wasteland, we arrive at Veiðivötn. This area’s green vegetation and wilderness is a stark contrast from our drive. We stop here for a picnic lunch and to look at the numerous lakes. These gorgeous bodies of water range in size and can be inside of a crater, lava field or in a fragile oasis. After a bit of exploration, we continue our journey to the destination of the day -  Jökulheimar, which is located on the western edge of the icecap Vatnajökull. Here, we will spend the night in a rustic mountain hut.

Day 2: Jökulheimar - Heljargjá – Waterfalls of Þjórsá - Dynkur, Gljúfurleitarfoss

We wake up to views of vast, open landscape and glimpses of Vatnajökull glacier. After a refreshing breakfast, we start our day of exploring fascinating natural wonders. First up is Heljargjá; a fissure that gives a good example of the volcanic activity in the active rift zone. Next, we look at the magnificent waterfalls of Þjórsá. Dynkur and Gljúfurleitarfoss are two of the most beautiful and grand waterfalls in the country and are in danger of being terminated due to plans of harnessing the power from Þjórsá river. These hidden gems allow for us to enjoy their splendor without a crowd because only a few know of their whereabouts. After a day full of exploring the wilderness in the Icelandic highlands, we head to our comfortable country hotel to rest for the evening.

Day 3: Landmannalaugar -  Reykjavík

On our last day, we visit a real pearl of the Icelandic highlands; the renowned Landmannalaugar in the Fjallabak Nature Reserve. Located at the foot of a lava field from an eruption in 1480, Landmannalaugar is famous for its spectacular landscape, adventurous hiking trails and for being the 3rd largest geothermal area in the world. We will spend the day exploring the beautiful multi-colored rhyolite mountains and take a dip in a natural geothermal hot spring. In the afternoon, we head back to Reykjavík, where our highland adventure comes to an end.
