Remote Highlands: Witness Black Deserts, Green Moss and Secret Waterfalls

On this amazing tour, we will travel to some of the most remote mountain tracks of the Icelandic highlands. We visit the great Vatnajokull glacier and continue our journey alongside Iceland’s longest river, Þjórsá. The beautiful scenery is compounded by the gorgeous waterfalls performing secretly for you. We will be one of very few members in the waterfalls audience as their stage rests hidden from most travelers. We will then leave this relatively green area of Veiðivötn and head towards Jökulheimar. On this segment of our super jeep tour, we cross some of the blackest deserts on earth, and a place where vegetation is extremely rare. On special occasion you might find yourself fascinated by a fragile flower that has managed to fasten its roots against the odds. During our way back from the otherworldly experience of Iceland’s highlands, we make stops at Glúfurleitarfoss, Dynkur, and Landmannalaugar to end a perfect tour of the Icelandic highlands.

  • Itinerary:

    Day 1 Reykjavík - Veiðivötn – Jökulheimar

We start our highland adventure by driving from Reykjavík to Veiðivötn. We head south through the villages of the south until we turn inland away from the greeneries of the farmlands and in to the black deserts and the wide expanses of the highlands. After a drive in the wasteland we arrive at Veiðivötn which will welcome us with a warm embrace of vegetation and precisously green wilderness. Here we stop for a picnic lunch and look at the numerous lakes, which are of various sizes, some of them crater lakes, the lava field and the fragile oasis. We continue our journey to the destination of the day Jökulheimar at the western edge of the icecap Vatnajökull. Here we will spend the night in a rustic mountain hut.

Day 2 Jökulheimar - Heljargjá – Waterfalls of Þjórsá - Dynkur  Gljúfurleitarfoss

We wake up feeling that we are in the middle of nowhere with nothing but the wasteland in front of us and glimpses of the Vatnajökull glacier. After a refreshing breakfast we start our day of exploring various and fascinating natural wonders. First on the program is Heljargjá; a fissure that gives a good example of the volcanic activity in the active rift zone. Next we will take a look at the magnificent waterfalls of Þjórsá and which waterfalls lie hidden away from the regular travelers routes.  The waterfalls Dynkur and Gljúfurleitarfoss are one of the most beautiful and grand waterfalls in the country and in danger of being terminated due to plans of harnessing the power from Þjórsá river. After a day of exploring the wilderness of the icelandic highlands and the forces of nature we will head to our comfortable country hotel where we will spend the night.

    Day 3 Landmannalaugar  -  Reykjavík

Today we will get the chance to visit a real pearl of the Icelandic highlands; the renowned Landmannalaugar in the Fjallabak Nature Reserve. Located at the foot of a lava field from an euption in 1480, Landmannalaugar is famous for its spectacular landscape and adventourous hiking trails. We will spend the day exploring the beautiful multi-colored rhyolite mountains and take a dip in the natural geothermal hot spring. In the afternoon we head back to Reykjavík where our highland adventure comes to an end.
