Itinerary - Knitting and Northern Lights
Icelandic knitting heritage lecture (about 1 hour): Hélène will tell us about the rich Icelandic tradition
and will show us a few genuine samples. She will share with us stories from elderly knitters she has
been interviewing in the past years.
Icelandic unspun wool workshop (about 1 hour): Hélène will tell us about the genesis of the famous
unspun lopi and we will experience the feeling of knitting with this highly breakable yarn. We will knit
a little sample in the round, using the Magic loop technique.
Steek with me workshop (about 1-1 ½ hour): almost everything in Icelandic is knitted in the round
and then steeked if necessary. For Icelanders, purling back, especially in stranded knitting, seems
more intimidating than steeking. We’ll learn many different steeks and, at the end of the course, you
should never be afraid again to cut into your knit!
Traditional Icelandic Leaf mittens workshop (about 3-4 hours): inspired by the beautiful collection
of mittens seen at the Thingborg Wool center, from the competition that was held in 2000, Hélène
will tell us a bit about the many traditions of mittens in Iceland. She will tell us especially about the
origins and the special motifs in the colorful traditional mittens from the West fjords, called Leaf
mittens. We will knit a sample in stranded knitting and go through some neat shaping and finishing
techniques for mittens.
Knitting equipment: please make sure to bring the following equipment for the workshops - the yarn is supplied:
Circular needle, long and flexible, and double pointed needles 4 and 4,5 mm/US 6 and 7
Crochet hook nr 3/US
Small safety pins: at least 4
Darning needle
Scissors
Sketchbook and pen
