Itinerary - Knitting and Northern Lights
Day 1: Afternoon arrival at Keflavík and a transfer to Vatnsholt farmhouse where we will enjoy the warm hospitality and comfort of the Icelandic countryside. Welcome dinner and first lecture and workshop with Hélène who will tell us about the Icelandic knitting heritage and will introduce us to the special Icelandic unspun wool.
This is provided all participants are arriving on the same day at similar hours. Normally flights from Europe arrive in the afternoon but N. American flights arrive in the early morning. If you are arriving from N. America, contact us for details on the transfer.
Day 2: Right after breakfast, we’ll steek our knitting! When it’s day-light, we’ll set out on an excursion into the Icelandic landscape. No matter how the weather may welcome us, we will hike into the magical landscapes of steaming hot springs and bubbling solfatares and even dip into a natural pool to warm us up! A trip to the local swimming pool to wash off and a visit to the Thingborg Wool Centre not far from our guesthouse: a true knitter’s paradise filled with handspun, handdyed with plants and specially crafted Icelandic yarns by local wool experts and spinners. Picnic lunch enroute and dinner at Vatnsholt and possible northern lights hunting in the evening...
Day 3: In the morning, inspired by the mittens in display at Thingborg, we will do a workshop on traditional Icelandic Leaf mittens with Hélène. In the afternoon, we will enjoy some free time that we can use for walking around in the magnificient surroundings, petting the animals or going horseriding on the premises, relaxing in the outdoor hot tub or simply knitting in peace. In the evening, women from the surrounding area will bring their knitting and sit with us, trading secrets on patterns. Lunch and dinner at Vatnsholt.
Day 4: Today we set out for Reykjavík visiting the picturesque city Folk Museum at Árbær, before checking in at a conveniently located guesthouse. Lunch at a local restaurant and then a walk to the City Hall for the 5th edition of the Craft and Design Fair, where we have a chance of chatting with talented local designers. This is the only fair of this kind in Iceland. We’ll also get to meet some of the designers from The Icelandic Knitter’s magazine. Farewell dinner at a local restaurant.
Day 5: Transfer to Keflavík Airport for departure.
