Icelandic knitting heritage lecture: Hélène will tell us about the rich Icelandic tradition and will show us a few genuine samples. She will share with us stories from elderly knitters she has been interviewing in the past years.
Icelandic unspun lopi wool workshop (about 1 hour): Hélène will tell us about the genesis of the famous unspun lopi. We will knit a little sample in the round, using the Magic loop technique that allows to knit on a long circular needle even the smallest diameters.
Lopi workshop (3-4 hours): We’ll learn about the Icelandic knitting history, how the traditional Icelandic yoke sweater emerged a surprisingly short time ago and how the yoke pattern developed in the expert hands of Icelandic women. We’ll go through all the basic techniques and will knit a little lopi sweater using magic loop. Emphasis will be in the yoke knitted in stranded knitting with two or three colors, holding yarn in both hands. We will have fun sharing our different ways of holding the yarn.
« Steek with me ! » workshop (about 1 hour) : for Icelanders, purling back, especially stranded knitting, is probably more intimidating than steeking. But, beside the traditional method , we’ll explore many different steeks and, at the end of the day, you should never be afraid again to cut into your knit !
Icelandic intarsia workshop (3 hours): this unique tradition, unknown outside Iceland, was mostly seen in knitted inserts worn in soft shoes made of fish skin or sheepskin in the past centuries. The knowledge was being lost but thanks to Hélène’s researches, it was not only preserved but also given a new life in her colorful book, translated in many languages. We will knit a tiny insert in four colors with a cross motif and cover all the basic intarsia techniques as well as the specifics of the Icelandic intarsia. Hélène will also tell us about yarn management and give us tips for knitting the modern and challenging designs in her book.
Knitting equipment: Yarn for the workshops is supplied but make sure to bring the knitting equipment listed in the equipment list.
