Touring Iceland in a Super Jeep

Touring Iceland in a Super Jeep

Small Cars Don't Always Cut It

In Iceland, a small car with a small wheel base can get you to some beautiful places. However, if you do stick to a regular car, there is at least as much outside of your reach as there is within.

This is for the simple reason that the best parts of Iceland can only be access with 4x4 vehicles, and the very best parts often only with modified 4x4 vehicles, or what we call Super Jeeps. These vehicles have extra-wide wheel bases, raised suspensions, air-and water-sealed engines and HUGE tires. When we say huge, we are not kidding: 38 inches is the standard, souped-up size.

No Off-Roading

While actual off-road driving in Iceland is strictly forbidden for environmental reasons, sticking to the mountain or F-roads extremely close to being off-road. A fair bit of shaking around comes as standard.

Steaming up and down steep ascents and descends, plowing along and through deep, fast-flowing glacier rivers deep will most likely be one of the most exciting parts of your stay in Iceland. Here, you need a driver that really knows what they are doing. It’s far from easy, and it can go very wrong in the wrong hands.

With Iceland Rovers, you are in the right hands. Iceland Rovers specialises in Super Jeep tours all over Iceland, and nowhere is off limits. We will take you to see things you didn’t know could possibly exist, and places you would have never imagined being able to set foot. Here is a round up of some of our favourite tours for winter and summer.

Winter

Winter highlights is an amazing round up of the best of the Iceland winter highland landscape: this is a story of Arctic temperatures and hot springs. The 200-kilometer Kjölur route (Route F35). This centuries-old route through the highlands stops at Hveravellir, one of the most remarkable hot springs in Iceland. This is truly the middle of nowhere!

For something different, see the Westfjords as you have never seen them before. Get access to one of the most remote and difficult-to-access areas of the country and get a glimpse into Iceland’s past at an abandoned Herring fctory. We throw in some wintery waterfalls and some hot springs for good measure.

Summer

See the black sand desert and harsh terrain of the deep, interior highland region, the fissures of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge along with the steaming earth at Landmannalaugar, right up the the edge of the Vatnajökull Ice Cap and through the verdant þjósárdalur.

Ever wanted to set foot on a ice cap? Our Ultimate Adventure Tour takes you onto the Vatnajökull Ice Cap and to what is possibly the most amazing mountain hut in Iceland. This hut sits on top of a glacier that covers 10% of the country, which happens to be the most active geothermal area in Iceland.

What doe that mean?  It’s extremely warm in there, it even has it’s own natural steam bath!  And you're on the ice cap! You can imagine what kind of journey this is; few people will ever set foot here, and you could be one of them!
