Rovers of the Month: James and Bonnie get a Last Minute Adventure!

The following is a story about which we are very proud, it reminds us why we do what we do.  James and Bonnie came to Iceland and bumped into a logistical problem, which we were more than happy to solve, and they both went form having nothing to do to having a day out to remember for a very long time. This is their story.

For this week, we have a double Golden Circle feature alongside our sister company Icelandic Mountain Guides. Check out what makes our Golden Circle experience special!

What motivated you to visit Iceland?

It was coming up to our anniversary and Bonnie asked me what we should do to celebrate. I said that going out for a meal was out of the question as Bonnie had just got over food poisoning from our last meal out, so I suggested a weekend away.

It was Bonnie that came up with the idea of going to Iceland, the Northern Lights sounded romantic, except, she didn’t think a weekend would be long enough. I can honestly say, I couldn’t agree more!

How long did you stay? Did you travel solo, or in a group?

We stayed for 5 nights, 6 days, although it was 5pm by the time we touched down after our 3 hour flight, we caught a coach back to our Hotel in Reykjavik and had a walk round for an hour in the frozen snow. As it was an anniversary treat, it was just the two of us.

Which tour did you take and why did you choose it?

We went on several tours, that Bonnie had to pre book from home, due to needing wheelchair access. We booked the Golden Circle, Northern Lights and Blue Lagoon with a meal in the Lava restaurant afterwards, which I can highly recommend.

It was actually because a tour company had let us down for the Golden Circle tour that led us to find the Iceland Rovers.

We had been refused entry onto the mini bus, due to no space for Bonnies wheelchair, although saddened by the turn of events, we were not put off. It was a Sunday, we wasn’t expecting much to be open when we went into town, but we thought we may be able to get an open bus tour or something. We found tourist information was open, briefly explained what happened and we had some time on our hands. We only expected the woman to suggest a town tour or museum, but, she surprised us with a much better idea.

What is the one thing you will always remember about your tour?

There is not one thing I would remember about our tour, there are loads!

The woman in the tourist office suggested the Iceland Rovers, “They do private tours and they have big jeeps, so they can access more areas than a coach and get you closer to the sights.’’ We took some leaflets back to our hotel.

Monday we had the Blue Lagoon tour booked, so Tuesday was the only day we had left. From the moment the I rang Saevar, everything was taken care of. I gave a basic description of the Golden Circle tour, with some modifications! ‘’And can you get us to the airport for 3.15pm?’’ He instantly replied ‘’yes.’’

Our whole tour with Iceland Rovers was booked with less than 24 hours notice!

So the last day arrives, up early, bags all packed and we are waiting down in the Hotel lobby by 7.45am. Our guide Lully, arrived early, always a good sign, and it only got better. His jeep is equipped with a big screen sat nav, so we briefly talked about what he had planned for us, where we would be going and the time frame we have to work with. I told Lully I would leave it in his hands as to what we do and what he thinks is best. Well, Lully must have thought of just about everything! He allowed a set time for each location, and how long we would be there, where we could eat or drink and even stopped off to pick us up some lava, There was never a dull moment, he always found something to keep the conversation alive. We loved every minute.

What is something that you learned about Iceland that surprised you?

There is so many surprises in Iceland, there is so much to see and do. Icelandic people are so helpful and friendly, the water is so pure and clean, the views are amazing, you just have to see it to believe it.

If you had more time in Iceland, what else would you like to see and do?

If we had more time, wow, I couldn’t imagine how much time you would need to explore, so much to do. The Glaciers would be a nice tour, and I know who I would book for that, without a doubt.

What tips do you have for people who want to visit Iceland?

Do some research before you go, to make the most of what you can do and book tours before you visit. By far, the best tour for us was the Golden Circle, I think because it was a private tour, we had a far better experience than the planned coach tour.

What adventure are you off on next? What is your next dream adventure?

Our next adventure, we are off to Hollywood L.A. Already booked and planned, but I have a funny feeling Iceland, that you haven’t seen the last of us!
