Super Jeep Expedition to the Great Vatnajökull Glacier

Iceland is truly a geological wonder and everywhere you go you can find steaming hot springs and active volcanoes, even in places you would least expect to find such phenomena. On the Ultimate Adventure Tour you will get to experience some of Iceland’s most extraordinary places, the top of the biggest glacier in Europe (where we find the a natural steam bath only a few have tired) that is also the home of Grímsvötn volcano and Landmannalaugar with its rhyolite volcanic mountains and hot baths. During our trip we also take short hikes to get to know the history and geology of Iceland, and visit the world famous hot springs of the Geysir area and the Gullfoss waterfall. On our adventure we travel in Super Jeeps that are specially equipped to handle the Icelandic mountain roads and glacier driving in winter. Driving distances and times will vary from day-to-day, depending upon road and off-roads conditions. Unpredictable weather conditions add to the adventure, so this is a tour for people who dare to face the unexpected! On this ultimate adventure we offer some of Iceland’s best and most experienced mountaineers as guides to take us places that most people never see!

Included : At least 2 Super-Jeeps and driver-guides carrying maximum of 4 persons in each jeep. 1 night in a guesthouse in the south of Iceland, 3 nights in sleeping bag accommodation in mountain huts. Full board on the tour with picnic lunch.

Excluded : Optional upon request: hotel in Reykjavík and transport to and from airport.

Meeting Point : Participants are picked up from their accommodation in Reykjavík the morning the tour starts.

Day 1: Reykjavik – Geysir – Gullfoss – Jökulheimar
Pick up and departure from your hotel / guesthouse at 09:00. We begin our tour with a visit to the spouting hot springs in the Geysir area (up to 30 meters!) and the famous Gullfoss waterfall. From there we head up to the highlands, following the off-road over the snow and frozen ground across the highlands to Jökulheimar mountain hut where we stay for one night.

Day 2-3: Vatnajökull Glacier – Grímsvötn mountain hut
On top of the Vatnajökull Glacier we find Grímsvötn. There we are going to spend two nights in a mountain hut heated with natural hot water, and we are going to get a chance to try is the strangest steam bath in the world! We have a whole day to spend on the glacier and depending upon conditions we may be able to go over the glacier to the north side of the Vatnajökull glacier, where a hot river that runs down the gorge and it is possible to take a hot shower out in the snow - if you have the courage to take of your clothing up on the glacier!

Day 4: Landmannalaugar or Mt. Hekla volcano
Coming down from the highlands we will estimate the time it is going to take us to get to Landmannalaugar. If the conditions are favorable we will be able to go there but only of the weather, snow and temperature allow. As an alternative we have the magical volcano Mt. Hekla, the most famous and most active volcano in Iceland. In medieval times it was believed to be an entrance to Hell. The last eruption of Hekla goes back to 2000. Overnight will be in Landmannalaugar mountain hut or a guesthouse in the country side; sleeping bag accommodation or guesthouse (double room).

Day 5: Þjórsárdalur – Reykjavík
Today we traverse the beautiful wide plains of southern Iceland on the way back to Reykjavík. On the way we will visit the Þjórsárdalur valley and the beautiful double waterfall Hjálparfoss.
