South Coast, Black Beaches, Waterfalls and Glacier Walk
Experience the area of the Eyjafjallajökull eruption!
This is an exciting day tour that takes you to the area of the
recent eruption in Eyjafjallajökull glacier. From Reykjavík, we take the
main road eastwards in the direction of the Mt. Eyjafjallajökull
glacier massif. On the way depending on the visibility, you will get
chance to observe the volcano and the steam cloud that rises from it as
we approach the areas affected by the as fall. Driving through this
region is a very unique experience. The formerly green pastures are
blackened with ash and the feel of the surroundings is quite special.
Still, in some places the green colors of spring are breaking through
again telling us that nature has seen this all before. Arriving at the
Sólheimajökull glacier tongue a part of Mýrdalsjökull, Iceland’s fourth
largest glacier,we go for a Black Ice Glacier Walk (1h). On the
way back we take a 4x4 drive down onto the black sand beaches and admire
the beauty and power of the North Atlantic Ocean. Last but not least,
the picturesque waterfalls Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss are mandatory
stops where the brave ones can venture behind the waterfall as it falls
off its cliff!
