We were driven by Stefan, an expert 4x4 driver in a very comfortable jeep with massive tyres. Stefan was amiable and was great company; but clearly an expert, not only in driving and mechanics, but also in geology. He also kept us informed about amusing anecdotal Islandic tales that related to where we were.
The scenery is impressive on this tour, from Atlantic sea views to permanent snow, boulder lava and stunning waterfalls. To stand on a new mountain that was still steaming hot was the most incredible experience I have had. To be driven across a river, up steep slopes and along permanent snow was just amazing. I was with three others whom I had not met before, but we quickly formed comraderie, thanks to Stefan's engaging company.
This was, without doubt the best day I had in my stay in Iceland.
